Ferry sinks, 59 drowned
NZPA-Reuter Philippines At least 59 people were believed drowned when an inter-island ferry split in two and sank in heavy seas in central Philippines, the coastguard said. Another 128 passengers and crew were rescued after the boat sank about three miles offshore between Negros and Siquijor
islands. Coastguard spokesman, Mr Leonardo Mabbagu, said that eight bodies had been recovered and 51 people were missing, presumed drowned. All the dead and missing were Filipinos. Mr Mabbagu said that three survivors were members of the United
States Peace Corps. Mr Mabbagu said that there were 187 passengers and crew aboard the ferry which was constructed to carry only 80. He said that the dead included a boy, aged seven, but among those rescued were a boy, aged nine, and a baby, aged 10 months.
