The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Five annual reports were tabled when Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. They were the reports to March 31, 1987, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Building Performance Guarantee Corporation, the Commerce Commission, the National Housing Commission and the Nursing Council. Ministers answered 13 questions. The House then moved on to the general debate. After the debate, Parliament moved on to Orders of the Day, and three private member’s bills were passed through their first readings. The Nurse Maude District Nursing Association Amendment Bill, introduced by Mr D. fi Caygill (Lab., St was referred to the
Social Services Select Committee. The Methodist Charitable and Educational Trust Amendment Bill, introduced by Mr M. L. Wellington (Nat., Papakura), was referred to the Education Select Committee. The A.M.P. Perpetual Trustee Company Bill, introduced by Mr S. J. Rodger (Lab., Dunedin North) was referred to the Justice and Law Reform Committee. The committee stages of the Wellington Harbour Board and Wellington City Council Vesting and Empowering Bill and the Auckland Regional Authority Amendment Bill were considered. Both were reported back to the House and the Auckland Regional Authority Amendment Bill passed through its third reading. The Wellington bill was set down for its third reading next sitting day. The House adjourned, for dinner at 5.30 p.m.
R. F. H. Maxwell (Lab., Waitakere) had moved that the Fencing of Swimming Pools Bill be discharged and recommitted to the Internal Affairs and Local Government Select Committee for further consideration. When the House resumed at 7.30 p.m., Mr Maxwell amended the motion to correct the name of the select committee, to Social Services. The motion was lost, and members went on to debate the bill’s third reading. The bill passed by 31 votes to 20. The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Moyle, introduced the Producer Boards Amendment Bill. The bill was passed through its first reading before the House moved on to resume debating the interrupted introduction, by Mr Wellington (Nat., Papakura), of the Accident Compensation Bill (No. 2). The debate was interrupted when the House rose at 10.30 pan.
