National thwarted
Political reporter Efforts by the Opposition to have Parliament finish its business this week and rise today have been frustrated by the Government. National has facilitated the passage of nearly 20 pieces of legislation this week by putting up minimal debate on them. It did this in the hope that by today the Government’s Order Paper could be completed and valedictory speeches by retiring members and the party leaders, set down for Tuesday, could be held.
This ploy has been foiled by Labour which has decided to take reports of select committees today. These reports can take up to 60 minutes each and would rule out valedictory speeches as well. National sought to end Parliament quickly so that its election campaign could get under way as early as possible, with its leader’s rally scheduled for Monday at Hastings. This will go ahead anyway, but Parliament will have to reassemble again on Tuesday for valedictory speeches expected to last about two hours.
