Two killed in road block crash
PA Hamilton Two persons are dead and another Is injured after the car they were in crashed into a fire tender at a police road block near Waiouru yesterday. The Wanganui police district commander, Superintendent Steve Anderton, said the car had been involved in several incidents round Lake Taupo about 9.30 a.m. He said the car, with four occupants, had crashed into petrol pumps at a service station and the occupants were believed to have stolen petrol from another petrol station. “A roadblock was set up just north of Waiouru,” Mr Anderton said. A fire tender blocked half the road with ample space for the car to have driven round it, he said. The driver of the car misjudged the distance between the fire tender and a police car parked on the other side, and hit the front of the fire tender. Two teenagers were killed, one suffered minor injuries, and the fourth person was uninjured.
The names of the car’s occupants were not available last evening.
