Victorian Sires’ Stakes winner from N.Z.-bred mare
Holy Smoke, winner of the sAustBo,ooo final of the two-year-old section of the Victorian Sires’ Stakes at Moonee Valley last Friday, is closely related to My Lightning Blue. Holy Smoke, which rated 2:01 for the 1940 m mobile final, is from the New Zealand-bred mare. Holy Fire, which was named Good Friday in this country. Holy Fire, by Holy Hal, won nine races in Victoria including two at Moonee Valley. Her dam, Tristrin Dolores, is a half-sister to
Lightning, the dam of Lightning Blue, which was also by Holy Hal. Holy Smoke, by the Most Happy Fella stallion Keystone Scotch, is trained and driven by Russ Thomson. Another youngster with New Zealand connections in the news in Australia is Our Ducatti a two-year-old colt, by Smooth Fella, which won first up at Kilmore recently. The colt, named Ducatti in this country, was offered at the 1986 National Sales by his breeders David and Mrs Pat Jones, of Prebbleton.
Passed in at a reserve of $25,000 he was later sold privately to Brian O’Meara.
Ducatti was passed on to an England-based owner, Mr Stan Taylor, for a sum close to six figures after being trialled by the visiting junior horseman, Chris Alford, on the recommendation of Tai Tapu trainer, John Denton. Alford drove Our Ducatti in his debut Our Ducatti is the first foal from the smart Willie Win mare, May Win, which won several races for Mr and Mrs Jones.
