RX7 warning
Trippers to Japan bringing back Mazda RX7 cars should beware lest their engines seize. This was the message delivered at the annual meeting and special briefing of Amuri Corporation yesterday. Mr Charles Deans, of Amuri Motors Christchurch, said it was believed about 1400 vehicles a month were coming into New Zealand, overwhelmingly from Japan, under the personal import scheme. This was more than the total of Toyota sales in New Zealand. Mazda RX7s were a popular import. These had affected the secondhand values of many cars, from RX7s to MGs.
Mr David Brown, the managing director of Amuri Corporation, said Mazda in Japan had issued a warning that the RX7s coming to New Zealand were tuned to run on unleaded petrol, and if run on ordinary fuel in New Zealand could pack up within 12 months. People buying Mazda RX7s should check whether they were made to specifications for export to New Zealand, he said. It is believed that under the franchise Mazda outlets are obliged to service privately imported RX7s. But whether the owners will get prompt service may be another matter.
