Mair buys former UEB Awatoto scour
Christchurch-based primary processor and exporter, Mair Astley, Ltd, bas bought through its subsidiary, Mairwool Coop, Ltd, the Awatoto wool scour in Hawke’s Bay, formerly owned by UEB. Mairwool will start operations at the Awatoto plant south of Napier on October 1, subject to approval from the Commerce Commission. Staff will not be affected by the change of ownership which both UEB and Mairwool de-
scribe as part of plans to rationalise each company’s operations. UEB management said it would allow the company to concentrate on its carpet manufacturing. Mairwool would continue supplying the adjacent UEB wool spinning plant, the company’s managing director, Mr Michael Dwyer, said. The purchase of the plant coincides with the closure of Mairwool’s Onehunga scour, previously known as Auckland
Co-op Wool Scour, Ltd.
Mairwool has recently sold its 50 per cent shareholding in Wanganui Wool Processors, Ltd, to joint venture partner, Cargill NZ, Ltd. Mr Dwyer said there would be major benefits for the Mair Astley group from the rationalisation of its scour interests. It now owned three scours — the Clifton Wool Scour, Ltd, at Invercargill, the Kaputone Wool Scour at Christchurch and the Awatoto scour.
