Martial law lifted

NZPA-AFP Taipei Taiwan’s President, Chiang Ching-Kuo, announced yesterday that martial law would be lifted today, after 38 years.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the presidential office. Martial law was imposed in 1949 by Mr Chiang’s father, the then Nationalist leader, General Chiang Kai-shek, to consolidate his grip on power when his ruling Kuomintang fled to Taiwan after defeat by communists on the main-

land. Martial law is to be replaced by a new national security law, which itself has been criticised by some people for being too restrictive. The removal of martial law is the most significant of the political reforms the 77-year-old president promised last year.

In the statement, Mr Chiang said he was “approving the proposal by the Legislative Yuan (parliament) and declaring the end of martial law for the Taiwan area tomorrow.”
