Inquiry into death of soldier may convene next week
NZPA Hong Kong The military board of inquiry looking into the accidental death of a New Zealand soldier, Private Nigel Ivan Richards, is expected to convene in Brunei next Monday. The Commander of the Singapore-based New Zealand Force South East Asia, Air Commodore Stewart Boys, said yesterday he believed the inquiry would begin its deliberations in Brunei on July 20.
The board would be convened by the British Forces which run the British Army’s Jungle Warfare School in Brunei, he said.
A New Zealander, Major Jerry Mataparae, would sit as a member of the board. Private Richards, aged 20, of Castle Rock, Lumsden, was accidentally shot in the abdomen while training with a fourman New Zealand reconnaissance group in Brunei on June 28.
