$30,000 damages

PA Auckland The Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Transport, Mr William Jeffries, has been awarded $30,000 damages against News Media (Auckland) Ltd, publisher of the "Sunday News.” Mr Jeffries, member of Parliament for Heretaunga, claimed that two articles in the “Sunday ’ News” in May of last year defamed him.

The articles related to the speed of a chauffeurdriven Ministerial car in which Mr Jeffries was a passenger in October, 1985.

The hearing was before Mr Justice Hillyer and a jury. Mr Jeffries claimed $50,000 for one article

and $lO,OOO for the second. The jury unanimously assessed damages ot $28,500 in respect of the first article, and damages of $l5OO in a majority verdict of nine to three for the second. The jury added a rider that it considered a public apology from News Media (Auckland), Ltd, to Mr Jeffries would be in order.
