Man alleged to have had 104 cartons of whisky
Trial by jury was sought by a man who appeared before Judge Erber in the District Court yesterday charged with receiving 104 cartons of whisky, valued at $29,800. Kewa Pakau, aged 39, a beneficiary (Mr D. J. R. Holderness), was remanded to September 15 for depositions to be tdkcn Baii of $3OOO was renewed. Police say the offence took place on June 16. ROBBERY CHARGES Two men facing a series of aggravated robbery charges allegedly committed in Christchurch over five days, were further remanded in custody until Friday when a depositions date well be fixed. Matthew Pakau, aged 36, faces six charges of
armed robbery, one charge of assaulting a man while armed with a knife with intent to rob him, two charges of wounding with intent to commit aggravated robbery, and being found without reasonable excuse in a yard in Breezes Road.
When he first appeared last week, Pakau was charged under the name of James Rangihuha Robinson.
Yesterday the charges were laid under his real name.
Carlston Pakau, aged 22, is jointly charged with the other defendant with committing four armed robberies, and with being found unlawfully in a yard in Breezes Road — where the pair was apprehended. Mr E. Bedo represented the two defendants. DISORDERLY CONDUCT A fine of $2OO was imposed on a man, aged 44, who dropped his trousers and walked around Cashfield Arcade wearing only a shirt about midday last Saturday.
Robert Daniel Ladbrook, who told the Judge he was a supervisor with the Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Service, admitted a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner.
Sergeant J. W. Dwyer said that at times Ladbrook had used a towel he had taken from one of the shops in the Cashfield’s shopping centre to occasionally cover his seminudity.
Ladbrook had been drinking.
Ladbrook told the Judge that he had until then refrained from drinking for 12 months. It was a bad lapse, said the Judge, fining Ladbrook. EXTRA TERM Six months were added to the present term of imprisonment being served by Robert John Condon when he appeared for sentence on charges of escaping from Paparua Prison, and converting a $3OOO car in Timaru. Condon, aged 22 (Mr E. Bedo), escaped by jumping into a car, which arrived near the prison, as he was emptying rubbish. Condon drove the car taken in Timaru back to Christchurch after "sorting out a few things” at Timaru. Condon faced a new charge of attempting, with another person, to escape from the custody of a police officer yesterday. On this charge he was remanded to Friday without plea. COMMUNITY SERVICE Eighty hours of community service was imposed on a mother of five when she appeared for sentence on charges of receiving clothing, valued at $963, and cosmetics and toiletries worth $452. Mary Arangi Cooper, aged 34 (Mr M. J. Glue), refused to tell the police who took the property to her home, where it was recovered during a police search.
She told police she paid nothing for the property, which had “arrived” at her home
