Super. repeal
By PETER LUKE, political reporter The first legislation of a National Government would be to repeal the surcharge on national superannuation, according to the party’s social welfare policy. The policy repeats the assurances first given in 1985 when the surcharge was introduced. National will instead raise the age of entitlement for national superannuation from 60 to 65. This would begin in 1989 and be phased in over two decades.
Those who retired at 60 and had no other means of support would be entitled to a separate in-come-tested benefit until they qualified for national superannuation. The surcharge has been bitterly opposed by the National Superannuitants’ Federation, in spite of Government claims that only 20 per cent of superannuitants are affected. National also said yesterday that the elderly would benefit from the removal of GST from basic food, doctor’s fees and local body rates.
