Kenny to captain Otago
PA Dunedin Otago’s rugby coach, Laurie Mains, has pinned his faith in the players who beat Southland for his team’s national championship opener against Canterbury at Carisbrook on Saturday. The side is the same as that which beat Southland except that Noel Pilcher and David Hamilton have been bracketed on the left wing.
Pilcher left the field with an injured knee in the final stages of the match at Invercargill, and his form in the last two games has not been impressive. Dean Kenny will captain Otago for the fifth consecutive game this season in the absence of the injured skipper, Mike Brewer. Brewer trained with the Otago team on Monday
night but neither he nor the flanker, Dave Callon, was considered because of lack of recent match play. The Otago team is: Paul Turner; Noel Pilcher or David Hamilton, Simon Anderson, Dennis Woods, Rhys Ellison, Lindsay Smith; Dean Kenny (captain); Brent Pope; Paul Henderson, Rob Gordon, Richard Knight, Gordon Macpherson; John Latta, David Latta, Steve Hotton.
