Thistoll team stylish in Riccarton trackwork
david McCarthy The Weedons trainer, Ned Thistoll, has his winter racing team well forward and they went through their paces stylishly at Riccarton yesterday. The work was conducted on the No 6 grass which was heavy though sprint times seemed to improve through the session.
The hurdler Applicate, a candidate for the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday, was the first Thistoll contender, run-
ning 1200 m in 1:26 with stable apprentice Stephen Rickerby up, the last 600 m in 425.
Rickerby later partnered Great Zeal in a solo 1200 m gallop of 1:21.5 the opening 600 m coming up in a very smart 37. He also piloted Harto over similar ground in 1:22.6 the last 600 m in 40.45. Jackie Jamieson worked Adios King and Ampac in solo gallops, the former running 600 m in 41s and the latter 1200 m in 1:20.8, home in 40.25. She was also the rider of Black Arrow which ended a solo 600 m in 42.45.
Famillion (Pitman) and Soundryl (Kenyon) attracted attention to their Washdyke chances sprinting very smartly from the 600 m in 37.85, as good a gallop as the session produced.
Toy Dagger, (Williams) gave Red Chiffon weight in their 600 m gallop and had to concede to the
Busuttin youngster in 38.85.
Rakau Tiffany (Hunsche) and Yourangsir (Morel) turned on a smart effort, too, running 38.95.
Vitzburgh (Kenyon) ran 1200 m, the last 600 m in 40s followed by Patticake and Palstep in 1:27 for the distance, home in 40.65. Gums a Calling ran a comfortable 41.3 s for his 600 m while Ben Wilkinson (Mills) and Sister Mary (Goble) sprinted in nicely in 39.2.
Cochineal (McCann) and Hawkwind (Dowling) were paired over 1200 m in 1:22.5 coming in smartly in 39.85, while Signum was let off with a solo 435.
Other 600 m gallops included Sajein, clear on On Appeal and Trillium in 39.55, Sweet King, an easy 465, Lineup 40.95, and Critique and Mitzi Gay together in 38.2 s while Puffasmoke ran a good solo 1200 m in 1:24, home in 40.75.
