$85M hotel plans

PA Wellington A 275-room international hotel is to be built in Queenstown by McConnell Dowell Corp subsidiary, Mac Dow Properties, Ltd, at a cost of $B5 million.

Mac Dow’s general manager, Mr Larry Eade, said negotiations for the project were under way. between his company and a number of international hotel chains. The hotel would be on a 1.06 hectare site which had frontages to both Lake Esplanade and

Brunswick Street, and would be built as a series of terraces sloping down the hill, Mr Eade said. Mac Dow’s special project manager, Mr Martin McGregor, said the design would enhance Queenstown’s standing as a top international resort. “It is the result of a very thorough market research and will have true and lasting appeal to both international and local tourists.” The hotel should be fully operational by late 1989, he said.
