Ruatoria charges ‘do not tarnish police’

PA Wellington The public image of the police has not been tarnished by Monday’s charges against eight police involved in the Ruatoria arsons investigation, says the president of the Police Association, Mr Keith Morrow.

By just after 9 a.m. yesterday there had already been 18 phone calls to National Police Headquarters that Mr Morrow said without exception supported the officers. “But it is fair to say that yesterday’s action has shaken police officers throughout the country," he said. “The association will be doing all it can to ease the domestic problems associated with a quite lengthy period of suspension.”

The association would provide the officers with defence counsel through its legal assistance fund.
