Brass class from group

The Christchurch Brass Ensemble is a newlyformed group that will make its first public appearance at a lunch-time concert at the Arts Centre on Friday. The group has been founded by two Christchurch musicians, Paul Claman and Mark Hodgkinson. These two formed the Christchurch Venetian Brass Ensemble in the late 19705. They formed the new ensemble on their return from overseas study. A brass ensemble uses trumpets, horns, trom-

bones and tubas in various combinations. The programme for Friday’s concert uses combinations for four to 12 players. It includes an “Echo Fantasia” by a sixteenth century Venetian composer, Banchieri, a Renaissance dance suite by Susato and the “Funeral March” by Grieg. A highlight of the concert is Beethoven’s “Equali” for trombone quartet. Another piece for quartet is Scheldt’s “Canzon Cometto” for trumpets. The concert will begin at 1.10 p.m.
