Building boom
Sir,—Glen Perkinson reports (July 11) that "unfettered developers exude pervasive optimism,” despite a study forecasting a space glut of city office accommodation by 1988-89. Lyndsay O’Donnel counters, saying that the present high-rise building boom is "reasonably demandled” and if older buildings cannot be filled they will be razed and car parks erected. Providing more city car parks will cause more peak traffic congestion and create a need for more city motorways, which are not popular in some quarters. Mr O’Donnel hedges his bets, saying that when the rate of development slows in the city, equivalent development will start in the suburbs. He asks: “Why have people travelling to the city each day when they live in the suburbs?” I ask are we seeing unfettered development without the guidance of a proper city plan? — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY.
