Nuclear-powered ships acceptable?
Opposition to nucleararmed ship visits by a National Government does not seem likely to extend to nuclearpowered vessels. Mr Bolger said last evening that he did not believe there was any real justification for banning the entry of ships just because they were nuclear-powered. Stringent safety rules were laid down in 1971 for the entry and berthage of such vessels, he said. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in the Soviet Union last year
had raised public fears and these had to be addressed, said Mr Bolger. But his information was that there was no valid comparison between Chernobyl and the safety aspects of visits by British or American nuclearpowered warships. More scientific study was needed, he said. Before a final decision was made by a National Government there would be a public inquiry into nuclear-propulsion systems used in vessels which might want to visit New Zealand.
