Black Reign indicated that a long overdue exit from maiden company could come at the Waimate Hunt meeting tomorrow when she galloped with stablemate Marwitzer at Riccarton yesterday. Black Reign has been a frustrating proposition for the Busuttin stable since coming south and stable

manager Jim Melton has all but despaired of her graduating from novice ranks. She gave the stable renewed confidence yesterda though, sprinting in from the 800 m in 50.2 s going nicely alongside Marwitzer whose race form has been disappointing. Black Reign will be tried in blinkers tomorrow when she lines up in the Morven Maiden the second leg of the TAB treble. Work was held on the No. 1 grass which is tradi-

tionally so fast as to be almost misleading but no records were posted yesterday. Pufasmoke produced the fastest 800 m of the session with a solo 49s late in the morning. Tai Yang was another Waimate runner to do his week-end prospects no harm running a solo 800 m in 51s. He has drawn badly in the Willowbridge Maiden. Earlier Kingslea Lady and Monkson had finished together in 49.3 s and Vitzburgh had produced a last 800 m in 50s after a solo gallop over 1200 m. Macho Man, a leading prospect in the Studholme Hurdles, was not after time but still managedd 800 m in 53s while Corrie Doon and Palakari were almost on terms in 50.25. The stablemates Hayle and Aurum Bard rounded off their Waimate preparation with an 800 m in 51.55, Biko and Meadow Maid were together in 535, Serene Pulse ran a smart 49.55, and Red Chiffon and Toy Dagger finished together in 50.45.
