Bourbon Boy favoured at Matamata

Special correspondent Auckland Bourbon Boy looks set for another run of good form and should be a clear favourite for the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Matamata Racing Club’s meeting at Matamata tomorrow. Through the second half of last season and the start of the present one, Bourbon Boy had nine wins in a row, the first of them in late March and the last over Bonecrusher and company in a weight-for-age 1600 m at Wanganui in early September. It was disappointing when he failed to come up as well in Sydney, in the late spring. But after a spell he is racing as though returning to his best again — twice second and once first in four attempts. Certainly he had to work hard last time, to win over 1400 m at Tauranga on June 20, Jayell’s Pride with the lesser weight by Ikg, running him to a head. However, that race should have improved him further. So Regal seems the likeliest to trouble Bourbon Boy. It will be a due win if he is successful because he had the bad luck last year in this event to come up against Catering King, which had form similar to Bourbon Boy’s. So Regal was the only one to get close to Catering King and his second placing, Jetbet: 7 Race 1 10.45 KITEROA STUD HURDLES $6000; 2800 m. 1 0061 Batelle 3 63.5 2 0031 Coruba Cruise 10 . . .R. though a length and a quarter away, represented a creditable performance. So Regal carried 53.5 kg then and he has the same weight tomorrow. He had a course of schooling to help prepare him for his first race after a spell, at Te Rapa on June 13, when he finished fourth, and looks to be training on well. Next to Bourbon Boy and So Regal the best prospects might be Daria’s Fun and Miss Etoile. Tom’s Dice, such a fine winter galloper, is interesting, but could need the run. Tom’s Dice is another which has had some schooling in his preparation. This, though, will be his first race for 12 months and he is a big, burly customer at the best of times. Daria’s Fun is racing solidly. He ran on for third last time, over 1200 m at Avondale on June 27, and 200 m further here could enable him to get even closer. The first leg, the middle-distance Guiness Quills Handicap, has drawn a fairly ordinary looking field with only Joal and Prince Avila making much appeal. Another to consider, though, is Quevado, a long-shot winner of the race last year. There was some promise of better form in his last start fifth at Avondale on July 4. 16 0069 Zareefa 4 62.0 17 0000 Normandie 11 62.0 18 509 Red Predator 5 62.0 Emergencies: Normandie, Red Predator.
