Canty ploughmen in Silver Plough
An experienced ploughman, Mr Ivan Maw, of Broadfield near Christchurch, is leading the Prebble Seed Canterbury Ploughinng Championship after five matches with 142 points. Second on 129 points is D. Brown, Temuka; third G. Carter, Greenpark, 128; fourth A. Begg, Wakanui, 123; and fifth W. Winter, Swannanoa, 112. S. Patterson, Seadown, leads the novice championship from S. Watt, Lincoln College, and B. Scott, Killinchy. Results from the recent matches in the Canterbury district include: Hinds Y.F.C., July 2: G. Gifford, Blenheim, 141 points, 1; A. D. Begg, Wakanui, and A. J. Rutherford, Southland, 137, 2 equal. Milford-Clandeboye Y.F.C., July 4: M. Bishnell, Blenheim, 144, 1; G. Carter, Greenpark, 142, 2; D. Brown, Temuka, 140, 3. Methven July 7: B. Smith, Broadfields, 144, 1; I. Maw, Broadfields, 140, 2; G. Gifford, Blenheim, 132, 3. G. Gifford and M. Bishnell join I. Maw and A. Begg, who qualified from earlier Canterbury matches, in the 1988 Mobil Silver Plough at Blenheim. From the Methven match D. Brown was the highest placed ploughman
who hadn’t already qualified for Blenheim and therefore earns a place in the final. He will be joined by four other Canterbury ploughmen who had already qualified in Southland matches, namely D. Quinn, Methven; R. Mehrtens, Seadown; B. Smith and J. Davidson, Rakaia. Two Australian ploughmen, Stewart Hogarth, Tasmania and David Smith, Victoria are competing on the Canterbury circuit this year which concludes with the Lincoln match next Thursday.
