‘Keating could owe $52,000'
NZPA-AAP Canberra
A National Party member of Parliament, Ray Braithwaite, has said that the Treasurer, Paul Keating, could owe up to sAust43,ooo ($NZ52,000) in back taxes. Mr Braithwaite, the National Party’s spokesman on industry and a chartered accountant, said
Mr Keating had apparently breached the Income Tax Act by not paying tax on sAust72,ooo (SNZB7,OOO) in travel allowances received since 1983.
“For a payment to be classed as a tax-free travel allowance, the recipient must be travelling away from his usual place of abode or normal resi-
dence,” Mr Braithwaite said. "There is now ample evidence to show Mr Keating’s usual place of abode is Canberra, the latest being putting his Canberra address on his election nomination form. “Mr Keating’s payment is not therefore a travel allowance, and is thus liable to tax.”
