Maxwell may buy ‘Today’
NZPA<;PA London The publishing millionaire, Robert Maxwell, looks poised to join the battle to buy the troubled London newspaper, “Today.”
Mr Maxwell, owner of Mirror Group Newspapers, is likely to make an announcement today about a proposed takeover of Britain’s newest national daily, which has never reached its 500,000 circulation break-even point. However, a spokesman for Mirror Group Newspapers would neither confirm nor deny that the group was likely to buy the paper from its current owner, Lonrho. News International's owner, Rupert Murdoch, has been named as a rival bidder, but that company’s corporate relations director, Arthur Brittenden, said: “We had contact with ’Today’ about a week ago. A’ new popular-market Sunday newspaper, "Sunday Sport,” also has submitted a bid which is thought to be well below the asking price. “Today" was launched by Eddie Shah in March last year and was bought by "Tiny” Rowland for Lonrho for £4O million (SNZIII million). Losses running into millions of dollars are expected this year and “Sunday Today” closed last month. . Offle of the chief attrition*, however, is the <£»• our printing plant.
