Man ends life as tramp

PA Auckland A man, aged 74, ended three years of being a tramp in Plymouth when he flew into Auckland, thanks to a fund-raising campaign in that English city. Bill Hooper, Englishborn but for most of his life a resident of Ngaruawahia, greeted reporters: “It’s William

Henry Hooper, but you can call me Bill.”

Mr Hooper, nicknamed Blinky because of his nervous eye-blinking, said Plymouth had been very nice. He said a snack-bar owner, Mr John Dudley, had held an appeal for his airfare when Mr Dudley heard he was homesick for New Zealand.
