Leader, president elected again

PA Lower Hutt The leader and the president of the Democratic Party were reelected unopposed on Saturday. At last year’s conference, the former leader, Mr Bruce Beetham, was ousted after 14 years at the helm in favour of the Democratic member for Pakuranga, Mr Neil Morrison.

The party had had a difficult six years, Mr Morrison told the party’s annual conference at the Lower Hutt Town Hall. “We have turned the corner at this conference, emotionally and spiritually.

“We were multiple thousands of dollars in debt, and getting further into debt every month,” he said. The Democrats were now comfortably in credit, and would have at least a dollar in the bank the day after the elections, Mr Morrison said. The president, Mr Stefan Lipa, and the deputy leader, Mr Alasdair Thompson, were also re-elected unopposed. The Democrats have a new vice-president, however, Mrs Margaret Cook, of Invercargill.
