N.Z. Handicap win for Grey Bo

Since giving up dairy farming five years ago to race and breed a few horses, a Cambridge couple, Les and Natalie Scown, have had the time of their lives.

Particular pride of the ‘Scowns is Grey 80, which to their almost disbelief, won the group three, $45,000 New Zealand Handicap, at Avondale on Saturday evening.

Some 15 minutes after the big race, when attending to the mare, Les Scown could still hardly ! believe the result. His reply to congratulations: “I just never thought it could happen to us.” The win was Grey Bo’s seventh arid raised her stake earnings by $28,150 to $54,675, a handsome return on the $2200 which the Scowns gave for her at a Claudelands yearling sale.

Except that she is grey,

her owners had no particular reason to choose’ Grey 80, offered as Lot 1 in the sales catalogue. Whatever- prompted it, they got a bargain. The way Grey Bo ages heavy ground suggests she could well picfc up another good winter handicap before long, perhaps next Saturday at Avondale, or even Trentham’s $30,000 Parliamentary the next Wednesday. Now rising six, Grey Bo showed any amount of. early promise as a three--year-old when she won Avondale’s Kelliher Plate by five lengths — but a tendency to “tie up” after paceworking hindered her progress for a time. Nowadays, she is spared track work in between her gallops, prepared instead by swimming. If not by quite the same 1 margin that gave her the Kelliher Plate, Grey Bo’s latest win was certainly

Ridden exactly to in-; structions by Catherine Treymane, aged 19 — well back off the pace to start with — Grey Bo came wide to join the leaders, Great Chevalier and Great Estate, as they approached the home turn in the 2200 m New Zealand Handicap and, soon afterwards, broke away to a clear lead. It was a procession from there on, Tommy’s Mate, which came on to head the chase, being three and a quarter lengths away and about the same distance ahead of Mister Lumlee which had nearly two lengths on Great Estate.

Jimmy Te Cobai, a game winner again in the first leg of Avondale's. T.A.B. double, is another who could compete at the Wellington winter meeting, his assignment the 1600 m Whyte Handicap next Saturday.
