Engineer’s report called for

The starting stalls at Riccarton will be examined by an engineer before they are used again under race day conditions.

This was the recommendation of the judicial committee after an inquiry into a 1200 m race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday.

Critique lost all chance at the start of The Latimer, losing so much ground that he was pulled up.

It was found that the gates on Critique’s stall and the gates of the adjoining stalls occupied by

Paper War and Paddy’s Turn had been fraction-, ally slow to open. The judicial committee confirmed the judgment of the club’s starter, Mr David Ruff, that a true start had been declared, but observed that Critique had been very restless in his stall before the start and that Paper War had become unsettled and had burst through. It was also thought that Critique’s nose might have been caught in the front of the starting gate as the start was made, that accounting for the loss of so much ground by that runner.
