‘Best yet to come’ from Gallipoli

“He’s turned into a racehorse and the best has yet to come,” said Jim Melton, the South Island racing manager for the Foxton trainer, Paddy Busuttin, after Gallipoli won the Canterbury Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. Busuttin sent Gallipoli south last week hoping the four-year-old would strike a firm track on Saturday. It did not pan out like that, but Gallipoli showed the qualities that counted to master soft footing and 11 rivals in the first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double.

Gallipoli snatched victory by a nose after Famillion appeared to have it won.

Gallipoli was a happy choice of a name, for he races in combined Australian and New Zealand interests.

The New Zealand partner in the Palatable gelding is Mr John Bowden, of Christchurch, chief engineer in a drilling rig in the Thailand basin. The Australian part-owner is Mr Warren Burgess, the rig

supervisor. Gallipoli has been entered for the big spring cups in Melbourne, but the $200,000 Lion Brown New Zealand Cup could be his mission in November. In the meantime, he will remain in the South Island to race at the Timaru meeting next Friday.

Gallipoli was ridden on Saturday by the Oraribased Barry Pelling, who is fashioning an impressive strike rate in middle distance feature races in the South Island. Noble Lyric triumphed in another cliff-hanging finish for the June Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The top weight responded generously to every vigorous demand made on him by John Dowling and kept out Dester by half a head. Noble Lyric has now won his last four races from the Ashburton stable of Jim Lalor and should be an interesting graduate to the ranks of Canter-bury-trained class one performers next season.
