My Arctic Wolf wins Healy Stakes

By

NZPA Sydney

The New Zealand colt, My Arctic Wolf, shook off a hoodoo and survived a protest to win the sAust4o,ooo W. J. Healy Stakes (1200 m at Eagle Farm on Saturday. My Arctic Wolf made light of his outside barrier to be on the pace throughout and withstood a late challenge from the Sydney filly, Khaptivaan, to win by a long neck, with Lord Scotia three-quarters of a length away third.

But the rider of the fourth-placed Pete’s Choice, Graham Watson, claimed My Arctic Wolf had crossed in front of his mount over the final 200 m and cost him a place.

My Arctic Wolf’s New Zealand rider, David Walsh, admitted he did duck in, but said Watson had exaggerated the incident and the stewards took only a few minutes to dismiss his protest. My Arctic Wolf was among several New Zealand gallopers on board the cargo plane which took 54 hours to arrive in Brisbane after a rough

trip from Auckland last month.

Trainer Garth Ivil said the long journey, and a drenching from heavy rain when the horse eventually got off the plane, caused a cold virus which did not show up until My Arctic Wolf finished tenth in the Lightning Handicap (1000 m at Eagle Farm on May 23.

The virus forced his scratching from the Elders Handicap and no sooner had he recovered than he was concussed in a float accident and missed the Tourist Minis-

ter’s Cup (1350 m on June 20. “He got out of the sick bed to win, but he came out of the race very well and it didn’t seem to hurt him,” said Ivil yesterday. Ivil is hoping My Arctic. Wolf can stay out of trouble for another week before next Saturday’s sAust23o,ooo Rothmans 100,000 (1350 m Although the Tourist • Minister’s Cup winner, Broad Reach, is a hot favourite for the Rothmans, Ivil believes his horse can make it two in a row. $7.10.
