Eastern beats Coast

The strong-running Eastern Suburbs centre, Willy Naoupu, scored four tries in his team’s 36-30 rugby league win over Greymouth Marist at Hampshire Street on Saturday. The match was the tenth and last in the trans-Alpine series between clubs from Canterbury and the West Coast. Because of the contrasting

team numbers Eastern was the only Canterbury side to play twice. It had already beaten another top West Coast combination, Runanga, in the first round.

In its other game Runanga achieved the sole West Coast victory — at the expense of Linwood. Suburbs held Sydenham to a draw.

Vince McCue equalled Naoupu’s 16 points on Saturday with a try and six goals. Nigel Hermansson scored Eastern’s other try.

Points for Greymouth Marist came from tries to Chris Winstanley (2), Wayne Dwyer (2), Terry Jenkins and Billy Daly, and goals by Mark Harrington (2) and Steve Jones.
