Rugby record under threat

A rugby record which has stood for 92 years is under threat in the Christchurch senior competition.

The wiry Marist right wing, Mark Vincent, needs only two more tries to surpass the top tryscoring mark for a season, set by a Linwood stalwart, Joe O’Brien, in 1895.

Four tries by Vincent against Suburbs on Saturday brought his aggregate this winter to 21, only one behind O’Brien’s longstanding tally. It was the third occasion on which Vincent has bagged four tries in a game, the others being against New Brighton and Albion. He also had three in one match,

against Merivale.

The O’Brien record has withstood many onslaughts, first from the legendary George Hart, who has claims to being the best of the All Black wings produced by Canterbury. He scored 21 for a rampant Christchurch side in 1930. That feat was matched by Jim Cartwright in 1940 and then by his fellow University back, Mort Fountain, the next season. Then in 1973 Scott Cartwright scored 21 for Christchurch.

Vincent has plenty of opportunity to set a new try-scoring record. Marist has at least five more matches to play.
