Whole bathrooms fitted in hotel extension
The 100 pre-fabricated bathrooms for the Chateau ’ Regency slipped in if like a charm, according to both the project’s architect and the construction firm, Luney’s. The advantage of the De Geest bathrooms, made in Oamaru, was that they only took 15 minutes a room to slot into place, said the general manager of Luney Construction, Mr Wayne Carlyle. It took a little longer to link the amenities to power, water, and sewer services but it was still
much faster than having many. workmen clairibering about-the. construction site building ‘ the room from scratch. , ■ < "The quality is better than we can achieve onsite and the cost is comparable,” Mr Caryle said. “We. will certainly consider using the process in other buildings.” The 100 bathrooms cost. $lO,OOO each. . , • The use of pre-fabri-cated rooms is not hew in . hotel and commercial development. It has been used extensively, in ; con-
struction in Japan and the United States but the pro’cess, is new’ to New<Zealand: * Mr Sheppard designed the bathrooms and the Oamaru firm put them together to his specifications. The Oamaru firm was contracted to build 288 bathrooms for the new Parkroyal Hotel. They were put together completely in Oamaru. They were then shrink-wrapped and carted to Christchurch where they ■ are then slotted into the hotel.
