Prices weakening as 1986-87 wool-selling season finishes

The 1986-87 wool-selling season finished with weakening prices during a sale in Christchurch yesterday of Dunedin and Invercargill wool. The market indicator has fallen 7c during the two days since the last South Island sale of Christchurch and Timaru wool, and finished yesterday at 433 c greasy and 582 c clean. The Wool Board has progressively increased support of the market during the last three days, bidding yesterday on 57 per cent of the offering and buying or having passed to it 26 per cent.

At the Christchurch and Timaru sale the board bought just 6.8 per cent.

Crossbred second-shear fleece of good average style and 50-100 mm or longer was described as 3 per cent cheaper than at the Napier sale on Thursday, while shorter crossbred second-shear and wool of good style was in buyers’ favour. Crossbred fleece was in sellers’ favour, crossbred bulky skirtings were 2>/ 2 per cent cheaper, crossbred clothing oddments of better style were in buyers’ favour and poorer oddments were 2>/ 2 to 5

per cent cheaper. Crossbred crutchings were on a par to 2*4 per cent cheaper, while crossbred lambs’ second pieces and locks were firm.

The price of Halfbred fleece, compared with the Timaru and Christchurch sale, was described as firm.
