Catering staff want more pay

industrial reporter Negotiations between a Crothall Industries subsidiary, Concept Foods, and the New Zealand Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Federation broke down in Wellington yesterday, said the federation’s secretary, Mr Rick Barker, i last evening. ! Concept Foods has won the contract to supply food to Ansett in New Zealand and will have flight kitchens in Auckland and Christchurch as well as one at Wellington Airport to supply the public and flights there. Mr Barker said' the flight kitchens would employ about 60 people in Auckland and Christchurch.
The union had sought $8.69 an hour for catering staff. The company had offered $7.45. The company had also sought to define kitchen hands so as to allow them to perform cooks’ duties.
“We feel the’ contract between the companies means that Ansett wants the catering done at rates of pay below the going rate.”
The matter had been referred back to the union in Christchurch and the outcome of its deliberations would be known by the middle of next week, Mr Barker said, i
