Career skills winners

The winners of the Career Skills New Zealand regional competitions were announced at ’ a special ceremony at the Civic Regency in Christchurch on Thursday evening- j

The competitions were held at Canterbury Court last week-end, and came from an idea begun in Spain about 17 years ago where people in various trades competed against one another.

Trades in the competition included waitering, sheetmetal working, cabi-net-making, automotive engineering, women’s hairdressing and welding. Career Skills New Zealand was set up recently by Mr Kerry Burke and through the New Zealand Craftsman Training Foundation, established in 1964.

The Canterbury competitions and Career Skills New Zealand in the region are run by Mr Jack Nolan, recently retired from the Christchurch Polytechnic, and his wife, Mrs Rebe Nolan, and by Mr Rickerby, chairman

of the career skills regional committee. Top regional competitors will go to the national competitions in Auckland in August, and from there a team will be selected to represent New Zealand at the 1988 International Youth Skills Olympics to be held in Sydney as part of Australia’s bicentennial celebrations.
