Education standards
Sir, —Recently there has been corresporidence about education standards, or lack of standards, in high schools. I think it is time for someone affected by the problem to put forward an opinion. I am in the sixth form and' it is my view that the primary schools are at fault I entered the third form without a sound knowledge of basic times tables. Although I have one now, it seems to me that I was disadvantaged. I should have known this at the end of primary school, but there never was much emphasis on learning such tables. Another area where I am still being disadvantaged is spelling. This year I am sitting Sixth Form Certificate English, but I still do not have adequate spelling skills, and I probably never will; something I should have learnt in primary school, but there was never importance or urgency placed on this. I strongly feel there should be a lot more emphasis placed on the basics at primary school as it is these that help you in later life.—Yours, etC., K. M. CHAPLIN. June 23, 1987.
