The golf widow?
By
ROBIN CHARTERIS
In London Kenneth Lane’s passion for golf lost him the passions of his wife, Carol. “You’ve heard of the golf widow?” she asked journalists after being granted a decree nisi in the High Court Family Division in London. “I am it."
Mrs Lane, who hates golf, said that if her husband was not on ’ the course, he could be found at the nineteenth hole, drink in hand. In a lament which will echo in the hearts of millions of golfing widows worldwide, she confessed: “Golf was his mistress. It was never another woman. I always knew where he was — out on the course.
“A woman I could
handle, but not that sport.” The couple were married 14 years and still share the same West London house, in separate bedrooms, just a No. 2 wood away from the Moor Park Golf Club.
. Mr Lane, aged 46, works nights, the Court was told. He would go staight from work to the course each morning, play a round, and then stay in the clubhouse for drinks before returning home and to bed.
The Judge described Mrs Lane as a dedicated housewife and mother of their three children. “She obviously needed and deserved the support of an understanding husband. I do not think she got it,” he said, granting the decree nisi.
