Charitable status cancelled
PA Wellington Donations to the New Zealand Nuclear-Free Zone Trust are no longer tax-deductible. The Inland Revenue Department confirmed that the peace group’s charitable trust status was cancelled from April 1.
The decision was made last month after the group issued a leaflet deemed by the department to show that the group had a political, not a charitable purpose, said the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Robert Adair. The leaflet seeks donations for campaigning to ensure that the public vote for a candidate with nuclear-free policies. The trust’s chairman, Mr Larry Ross, said the trust would appeal against the decision.
