Transplant patient to be cremated

By

ROBIN CHARTERIS

in London

An Auckland woman, Mrs Jacqui Culpiri, aged 33, who died while undergoing heart and lung transplant surgery at Harefield Hospital in London last Saturday, will be cremated at Slough, near London, tomorrow. A memorial service will be held in Auckland early in August after her. family have returned with her ashes.

Among those expected to attend the service at Slough are two New Zealand patients recovering from recent successful heart transplant surgery, Mrs Kay Burnett, of Marton, and Mr David Conway, of Auckland, both now outpatients of Harefield Hospital. Mrs Culpin, who suffered from lupus disease which destroys connective tissue and which led to pulmonary hypertension, came to London last December for the only surgery which could save her life.

Her wait for a suitable transplant donor was prolonged because of complications caused by a bloodclotting problem and a build-up of anti-bodies in her system.
