Suppression of name refused by judge

Interim suppression of name was refused by Judge Frampton for a man who appeared before him in the District Court yesterday on nine charges of fraud involving $51,906.

Sean Eric Bisset, aged 21, a baker (Mr A. Davis), is charged with committing the offences between September, last year, and March, this year. He was remanded on bail to July 9 without plea. Mr Davis had sought the suppression order because he considered publication could be prejudicial to his client’s attempt to sell his bakery business in order to make some reparation to the company involved. In refusing the application, the Judge said just because Bisset was facing charges in court, this should not affect the sale of the business which should stand or fall on its merits.

Bisset is charged with incurring a debt, or liability, of $51,906 with Francis Alison Symes and Company, of Wellington, in obtaining credit by means of falsely representing to be Barry Graham Richards. The other fraud charges involve Bisset’s obtaining and use of certificates for shares held

with Blandford Lodge, Brierleys, and Fletcher Challenge, to be used by him to obtain financial advantage. Bisset is also charged with fraudulently obtaining a Trust Bank deposit book in the name of Barry Graham Richards, and also a Cashflow card from the bank, in Richards’ name, both able to be used by the defendant to obtain financial advantage. SEX CHARGES Bail was set at $4OOO for a man, aged 48, charged with the sexual violation of two young girls, < and the indecent' assault of a third girl. Dennis John Batchelor, a storeman (Miss J. Drake), is charged with committing the offences, involving girls aged two to five, between February, 1982, and February, this year.

Bail was opposed by Mr B. M. Stannaway, for the Crown. The matter was heard in Chambers.

On his earlier court appearance Batchelor was granted interim suppression of his name. No such order was made yesterday.

The original charge of sexually violating a girl, aged two, was withdrawn yesterday. .

It was replaced by three new charges laid indictably. • . THEFT CHARGE A warehouseman, aged 46, charged with stealing electrical household items, and food, from his employer, Henry Berry, Ltd, worth $3503 was re- . manded, without plea, to July 2. lan Clive Ordish (Mr K. J. Searle) is alleged to have stolen the property between January 1 and June 25. Ordish was remanded at large. BAIL REFUSED “You will have to scream it from the rooftops,” the Judge told a duty solicitor, Mr W. Rosenberg, when he said he had been instructed by his client to apply for bail “in the strongest possible terms.”

Mark Wayne Fox, aged 19, a sickness beneficiary, was convicted of breaking into a house at Kaiapoi on June 24, and escaping from the custody of a police officer. Disturbed by a female living at the house, Fox admitted he was looking for cash.

In view of his lengthy criminal history, the Judge remanded Fox in custody for sentence on July 2.
