Reassuring trial
St James appeared to act well in deteriorating - conditions when he galloped on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. The likely favourite for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s two-year-old race tomorrow, St James led his stablemate. Meadow Maid, by half a leagth, finishing 800 m in 50.25. They recorded 36s for the final 600 m. Athol Brose and Corrie Doone had the best of the conditions offering when they worked early In the rain. They hurried in from the 800 m in 48.7 s — a time later trialists found out of their reach.
Rakau Tiffany, whose reappearance after a freshener, lends interest to the Ferrymead Handicap tomorrow, came up with 51.2 s for her 800 m and 37.2 s for the final 600 m.
