Wellington Ragatan and Asti Bay, both course specialists, look set to dispute the finish ... of the Te Mata Handicap, the first leg of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Hastings tomorrow. * Ragatan was fifth last week in the Winter Handicap, while Asti Bay filled a <. similar position in the DB Trophy race at Tauranga. impressive effort Forward Thinking chased Zaheer home last week and must have a fine chance to run in the money again. Noble Bay failed at Te Rapa when favourite and can do better, though more rain would help his prospects. A win at Awapuni followed by a third at Hawera earlier in the month, bring the entire right into contention. The major jumping event will be the Hawke’s Bay Hurdle, the second in the series of four that make up the Central Districts’ "Topdog” Hurdle series. Sir Ardua and Vinaman, first and second in the Awapuni Hurdle, front up again while the presence of Waikato Hurdle winner, Candy Case, adds interest to the contest. Outright, a big disappointment in the Awapuni, has a good record on the course. He won the race two years ago. Hike, from Taupo, and the Takanini gelding Saumur, are interesting newcomers to the circuit. Saumur comes here with fine credentials. He was second in the Tanalith (GN) Hurdle and then went on to beat Vinaman in the Campbell Hurdle on Ellerslie’s last day. He is up 3kg for that win.
