Maori Affairs staff face ‘job devastation’
PA Wellington Maori Affairs Department staff would face devastation of their career prospects as a result of extensive changes in the department, said the Public Service Association’s president, Mr Colin Hicks. The Government has announced it will restruc- > ture Maori Affairs by transferring management of Government pro- . grammes affecting Maori to iwi (tribes).
The move had been taken “without any consultation with the association ... in spite of assurances from the State Services Commission, the department, and the' Prime Minister, Mr Hicks said.. "Ever since , the Prime Minster’s statement, on Christmas Eve that the department would be broken up ... our members: have known their jobs and future with the .department have been under threat”
