Tourist train
Sir,—ln 1985 I had the pleasure of travelling on several steam-hauled specials run by the German Federal Railways in conjunction with the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary. The routes involved had been selected for their scenic value and, coupled with the attraction of steam motive power, proved extremely popular, attracting locals and tourists alike to travel on them. Such was their popularity that instead of the restored steam locomotives involved being placed in museums at the conclusion of the anniversary events, as was originally intended, the journeys were continued during 1986; for 1987, additional routes have been opened. There should be a lesson in this for the N.Z.R. The West Coast route would be one of the most scenic rail journeys anywhere. With the addition of steam traction and proper promotion, the two should be a recipe for success. — Yours, etc., A. C. GRANT. June 16, 1987.
