Paparua blocks meat retail application
The Paparua County Council’s town-planning hearing committee has prevented a precedent’s being set by Hellaby Meats, Ltd, through the establishment of retail sales in a wholesale outlet. The company sought
approval to erect and run a - wholesale outlet containing smallgoods manufacturing, a meat-cutting distribution centre, and offices -in Carmen Road, Hornby. The council agreed to allow an objection by a company competitor, Tenderkist Meats, Ltd, regarding the introduction of retail sales. Tenderkist’s manager, Mr G. B. Gray, submitted that the council would be inundated with similar applications if permission were granted and said his company had not applied for the right to establish a retail outlet because it knew permission would not be granted. The council was satisfied that the running of the smallgoods manufacturing, meat-cutting distribution, and wholesaling activities would be permitted uses under the District Scheme.
It did not accept that the sale of meat products
to the public would be part of the wholesale operation. Evidence presented by Hellaby Meats showed that the proportion of direct sales to the public would certainly not be minor, councillors said. Councillors also felt that there would be a potential for traffic accidents if retail sales to the public were allowed. j The council granted the application, apart from retail sales. ■ 1
