BNZ sponsorship manager
A Christchurch man will fill the new post the Bank of New Zealand has created to co-ordinate sponsorships. Mr Peter Jamieson will join the group marketing section at the bank’s headquarters in Wellington next week. One of his first tasks will be to write his own job description.
“The bank has a number of projects in sports and the arts. Our first really big one was the America’s Cup challenge and the idea was mooted last year of someone to
manage sponsorships nationally,” Mr Jamieson said yesterday. Until now the bank’s group marketing section in Wellington has handled sponsorship requests, but has relied heavily on staff at various branches to manage projects.
Mr Jamieson first became involved in sponsorships by the bank in his role as assistant manager, marketing, based at the Christchurch branch in Cathedral Square.
He was involved in BNZ sponsorship of the Canterbury Regional Opera Trust’s season of “The Magic Flute” last year and in support of the present season of “Carmen.”
He says the bank’s staff will stilLbe very much involved in sponsored projects. One criterion for protects is motivation of the; staff. Another is the .
enhancement of the bank’s image. The bank’s partnership with the opera trust was an example of a change in emphasis in sponsorship, he said. The arrangement was a share profit-share loss underwriting of the season rather than a straight cash grant. •.
“The bank is’not keen on handing out large dollops of money to anyone who asks. People have to prove that there Js something in it for the bank also.” • One area he will look at is new projects for the bank. Sponsorship of New Zealand’s yachting World 12-metre Championships campaign, and the World Bowls Championships in February next year, Is already organised. Both will give the bank, which is taking an increasing international role, overseas exposure. Mr Jamieson said the bank was committed to projects within New Zealand, such as support of the centenary of the National Parks, but was also conscious of an inter-, national role. He believed there was plenty of scope for branch support of regional activities as well as national campaigns.
Mr Jamieson has ’ worked for the Bank of New Zealand, in various roles and branches, since 1971/ ? '.o •?»>
