Fiji plans to lure tourists back to its shores with heavily discounted fares and holiday packages. Since the May 14 coup, the number of visitors dwindled to a mere trickle, Mr Michael Squibbs, a New Zealand tour wholesaler who has been attending the Fiji tourism convention, said last evening that he was optimistic the industry would recover. .
“I came up here last Sunday not knowing what to expect,” he said from Nandi. “I now have not the slightest doubt that the Governor-General is firmly in command. I have not seen any military presence and I would not hesitate to bring my family to Fiji right now for a holiday.”
Air Pacific, Fiji’s Stateowned airline, is expected to lead the way with the filing of cheap fares. At present, the low season excursion fare is $615 return, rising to $738 return in the high season. These fares are likely to be reduced close to $4OO. .
