Aust. sharply higher

PA Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply higher in very thin trade as investors zoomed in on leading industrial and mining stocks, brokers said. Investors largely ignored a slight fall in bullion prices overnight and concentrated instead on buying up bluechip industrial stocks and the biggest gold and heavyweight miners. "People want to be in the market before the election, and they may as well be in the quality end in case things come off afterwards,” one broker said. At the close of trading the all-ordinaries index was up 15.5 points at 1803.9, its highest close for almost three weeks. Brokers said the 1800 barrier is a key chart point Now it has broken through there the market is expected to run up to 2000 by September. The all-industrials index closed 17.1 points higher at 2621.3, the all resources index gained 14.3 points to 1180.7, and the gold index advanced 30.0 points to 3029.0. - Trading was thin because local investors have withdrawn before the July 11 Federal election here and many overseas investors await the outcome of the U.K. election. Overseas trade amounted to only sAustl9 million, but brokers noted

interest from Japanese institutions and from Europe overnight.
