Nuclear stance

Sir,—l “think the conclusions hesitatingly drawn by university psychologists on the effects on teenagers of the fear of nuclear war could be simply summed up: no society can behave normally when faced with the threat of total extinction, no matter how much it pretends it does not exist—Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. June 8, 1987.

Sir,—The international Antarctic Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty, to which the United States is a party, bans nuclear weapons from that territory. Therefore Deep Freeze aircraft cannot be nuclear-armed. The other United States military aircraft using Harewood, en route to Australia and other places such .as Hawaii, should not be nucleeir-armed. If they are, the United States is taking a very cavalier attitude to both Australian and New Zealand sovereignty. Our Government should seek a clear, public statement from the United States that these aircraft do not carry nuclear weapons or their components. The "neither confirm nor deny” policy is a nonsense to which we should not subscribe. — Yours, CtC COLIN BURROWS. June 6, 1987.
